The White Villages of Andalucia, Spain

With over 52 million tourists visiting Spain each year- it´s in the top 3 most visited countries in the world. And when one thinks of the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, it's easy to visualize high- rise apartment blocks, sumptuous hotels on golden beaches, the celebrity hangout of Puerto Banus and the very fast and furious N340/ AP coastal road! But there is much more to southern Spain than this. On this website, we will be looking at some of the provinces of Andalucia: Mainly Malaga, Granada and Cadiz.

Spain is made up of 17 autonomous regions, and the second largest of all-Andalucia, lies between the Sierra Morena and the Mediterranean sea , far south on the Iberian Peninsula. It´s name derives from when the Moors(from North Africa) invaded Spain back in the 8th century, and it was then called 'The Kingdom of Al Andalus'. They continued to rule in Andalucia up until 1500- and their influence can still be seen to this date.

Though considered the poorest region of Spain, Andalucia is rich in history, ethnic culture and stunning landscapes, which makes it a popular choice for holiday-makers and visitors to this region of the Iberian Peninsula. The climate in Andalucia is extreme... it suffers bitterly cold winters high up in the mountains , and to hot dry summers on the coast.

A few miles inland from any area of the Costa, reached by meandering, scenic mountain roads and tucked away in sheltered valleys or perched high on hilltops, lies a plethora of sleepy but functioning white villages ( in Spanish- "pueblos blancos" named thus because the whole town is white washed) They create a striking and sharp image as they contrast with the spectacular green and mountainous backdrop of the Sierras. Historically, (and before the days of air conditioning !) these villages were painted white to keep the inside temperatures cool, as the very high summer temperatures can reach 50o C.

These white villages, rich in history, dating back to the Romans and Moors, offer spectacular flora & fauna, historical castles and ruins, stunning walking routes and is a haven for birds & wildlife lovers

Today, there are several white villages dotted around the mountains of Andalucia, all ranging in population and historical interests , offering shops, churches, schools, banks, restaurants, bars, hotels, rural tourism, clinics etc- So take a step back in time, unwind and enjoy a stroll along their labyrinths of narrow, decorative clean streets, savour local food and recipes , spend a lazy afternoon at a traditional tavern, breathe in the pure unspoilt mountain air, and take countless photos -as believe me,around every corner there is a kodak moment!

Whichever white village you visit during your stay in Andalucia, we recommend you do some research beforehand, ie - find out about local events, arts and crafts exhibitions, local festivals, fairs and market days.... so your visit can be filled with interesting and memorable places to see and visit.

Ideally located apartment for rent, close to the white villages of Malaga

We hope this website will enthuse your senses and give you good , local advice on the various services, businesses, restaurants and accommodation available in and around these stunning white villages of Andalucia So, please enjoy, and make sure that during your next visit to southern Spain, you take time out to explore one or more of these hidden gems, which will make you want to return time after time. .
